No zombies today

Today is the first day of my new job. 

I can’t help but think about the last time I started a new position as a manager. It was almost two years ago at the airplane factory. I was sitting alone is a dark abandoned office building in Bellevue. There was no one to meet me, no phone, no monitor, no docking station, not even a power cord for my laptop. I kept thinking I was seeing zombies near the copy machine.

Today, at my new job, the director I report to came in on her vacation day just to make me feel welcome and introduce me to the team. She brought bagels. Good ones. She hung around for a while and we had coffee and mapped out some next steps for me to get up to speed.

I don’t think she had any idea how important little things like this are to me, so I told her. Minus the part about the zombies.

What if this is all real? What is these are nice, normal people? In Lilo and Stitch there is this idea that someone can find their one true place if they just keep trying.

I have kept trying. 

And I have kept singing k.d. lang.
