As usual I was listening to my favorite DJ, Anne Litt, on kcrw.com last weekend. Yes, I listen. No, I don’t contribute. I stopped contributing when that bitch Ruth Seymour fired Sandra Tsing Loh: http://orangeclovehead.blogspot.com/2004_03_01_archive.html
That took place almost exactly 4 years ago. Wow.
OK, I suck. Anne was playing really great music as usual. It was pledge drive time. I got all wrapped up in pledge drive frenzy. I contributed. I am so sorry Sandra. Really I am. More than most people totally I totally understand the importance of being loyal when an evil empire trying to destroy you.
But I love Ann Litt. And it’s been 4 years. And Sandra is doing fine. And I only gave them $50.
For my lack of loyalty KCRW sent me a new CD by this singer named Shelby Lynne. I have been aware of her for several years but have not been a fan. She has a reputation of sounding a bit like Dusty Springfield. To paraphrase Lloyd Bentsen, “She is no Dusty Springfield.” This new CD, Just A Little Lovin', is a bunch of covers of Dusty songs.
I was dubious, but I put the album on. Hmmm. Slow. Sparse. Interesting. Not sacrilegious. Not trying to sound like Dusty (like she even could), but genuinely not sucking at all. This is really very good.
By the time Anyone Who Had A Heart came on Mark informed me that I had tears coming down my face. The fact that I had nailed half a bottle of wine at this point may have contributed to this. I don’t care. I don’t care about Shelby Lynne either. I do care about Dusty and of course the larger Burt Bacharach oeuvre.
I discovered Dusty right around the time she died 9 years ago. I had always kind of known who she was, “What have I, what have I, what have I done to deserve this….”, but once I started listening to her albums I became a bit obsessed and fanatical. The fact that she was big lesabelle did not hurt one little bit.
There was a period of time when Friday nights after work could only be Bombay Sapphire martinis, Stilton cheese, and Dusty Springfield.
I still love her. I still love Stilton cheese. The Sapphire goes down a little harder these days.
You don’t really need to go buy Shelby Lynne. I just wanted an excuse to do Orange Clove Head with a Beehive.
Go buy this instead: http://www.amazon.com/Dusty-Memphis-Springfield/dp/B00000HZEQ/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1202242869&sr=8-2
